I’ve always been inclined to see more similarities than differences in people.
I am genuinely fascinated by the uniqueness and beauty in every human being I encounter.
When I was a teacher at the Krishnamurti Sahyadri School near Pune, India, I once asked my students to write an essay entitled “I want to be a human being.”
We published the book with the help of students and parents — and I still love leafing through it. It always makes me smile. My students too, tell me they remember that experience fondly.
Together, we explored what it means to be human from many perspectives, and we acknowledged — quite naturally — that being a human being is an absolute privilege, and a wonderful opportunity.
Yet so often, we forget.
We forget that being human is a privilege — a miracle, even.
These past months, I’ve watched with fascination the journey of Comet 3I Atlas through our solar system. An interstellar visitor older than our entire solar system, wandering through the cosmos and passing by just long enough to say hello…
How might Earth — and all of us — appear from such a perspective?
What would it take for humanity to stand together, to love and support one another, instead of clinging to old patterns of division?
There are 8 billion of us living on this small, shimmering blue planet.
Our Milky Way galaxy alone contains between 100 and 400 billion stars.
And beyond it lie two trillion galaxies, each holding billions of stars — more than all the grains of sand on the beaches of Earth.
If this doesn’t fill us with awe, what will?
All of this to say:
Being human — living on Earth — is something extraordinary.
So let me ask you:
Are you proud to be a human being?
Do you feel grateful for the life you get to live?
Are you happy with the choices you make each day?
Do you ever pause to smile at the vastness of your true home — the universe?
If you were asked again, would you choose to be human?
And perhaps the most important question:
What would you promise yourself?
Let’s do this exercise together.
At the beginning of this new coming year, let’s each make a promise — a commitment to our own humanity:
“This year, I promise myself to be the best human being I can be.”
A simple inner exercise
Place a hand on your heart.
Take a gentle breath.
Feel the warmth of your humanity, the miracle of your being here, alive, on this beautiful planet.
And ask yourself softly:
“What kind of human being do I want to be this year?”
Whatever answer appears — let that be your promise.
You could do this powerful exercise every single day, simply by asking yourself:
“What kind of human being do I want to be today?”
Let whatever arises be welcomed.
“This year, I promise myself to be the best human being I can be.”
Here is my promise:
- I will welcome every day with a smile – because we humans can smile so beautifully.
- I will keep my heart filled with love and treat all humans with respect – because here, on Earth, we are one family.
- I will treat our planet and all its inhabitants — minerals, plants, animals — with care, because our shared home deserves to be healthy.
- I will honour who I am by doing what I love and contributing my unique gifts to humanity.
- I will end each day with gratitude to Life, for allowing me — and all of us — to partake in its abundance and beauty.
Imagine… if you and I and everyone else made a promise to be the best human being we could be – if we chose to honour our humanity, our planet, and our potential with gratitude and joy…
What a wonderful world that would be.
Changing our world does not have to be difficult.
It starts with us.
With each one of us taking responsibility.
And making a simple promise –
To be the best we can be.
Will you make a promise too?
What kind of human being do you choose to be in this new year?
Share your thoughts and promise with friends and family, share it with me, if you want, or write it in your journal, or speak it out loud.
A promise made with heart has power. ✨

A parting gift for your new year
Here is a short mantra to accompany you in this new year and beyond.
“I honour my humanity.
I honour my life.
I honour my special place in the universe.
I choose to be a joyful, loving, and kind human being.
I choose to honour Life — and my human family — by being the very best me I can be.”
Carry it with you. Whisper it when you wake up.
Let it guide your steps. You are a beautiful human being.
Have a wonderful new year.
I know you will be the best you.
With trust and joy,
Silvana
